Having attended their Australian premier performance, where a full house at the El Rocco Jazz Club in Kings Cross welcomed the band, it’s easy to see why Howard Collins had thrilled audiences in his country and parts of Europe before his migration to Sydney. Paying homage to the greats like Sinatra and the Beatles, Howard Collins has put together a tight sounding 5-piece band that moves across a spectrum of musical styles.
Favourites from the 50s to 90s are included in the two-hour performance, with band members taking lead vocals on occasion to showcase their diversity. The mood of the night ebbed and flowed, with Swing standards like ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ interspersed with timeless ballads such as ‘Moon River’. The audience was soon waving their sparklers and feeding into the sound with the percussive instruments provided to them.
Not surprisingly, Howard Collins’ unleashed the Irish brand of humour at the right moments to take their minds off the heat in the crowded room. By the third set, there was no stopping the audience from dancing in whatever space they could find. With the encore song ‘Mustang Sally’, the call and answer of ‘Ride Sally Ride’ between Howard Collins and the audience made sure it could be heard down William Street! For a night packed with classic hits guaranteed to bring back the nostalgia of the good old days of true pop music, it’s hard to go past Howard Collins & His Band.
